Soi Books Visits The Other Art Fair, London
We only went down for a few hours but the recent visit to the Other Art Fair was great fun. The fair showcased an exceptional standard of work, and I was particularly taken back by the increasing presence of photography, ranging from abstract to landscape. Good to also catchup with some great artists we’ve got to know and see their work up, close and personal!
William Butcher
William is an artist based in Hertfordshire and he’s one of those artists we clicked with.
Maybe it’s his love of music or the fact that he loves to travel. But his remarkable skill, attention to detail, and his ability to create woodcut and etching effects by hand are amazing.
Keep an eye out for him as he hits a bunch more fairs and might even be travelling to a spot near you soon and take a moment to check his work out here.
Oliver Mayhall
Oliver Mayhall's work was truly eye-opening and I have to thank photographer Samuel Ryde for the intro.
Of course, I couldn’t help but mention seeing the work of Man Ray in Oliver’s work - maybe its the surrealism, maybe it's the ability to turn photography into fine art in a playful way - whatever it is, Oliver’s work was great to see and I love the way he works with both analogue and digital photography creating artwork that’s instantly visually engaging.
Samuel Ryde
Samuel Ryde's photography was a breath of fresh air, presenting ordinary subjects in extraordinary ways. His ability to weave compelling narratives and stories through seemingly unremarkable scenes was truly impressive. Loved seeing his book, "Hand Dryers," (need my own copy!) and loved talking to him about the finer details of pens - he and his mate recommended Lamy pens which i’m looking into now.
With little to no expectations, The Other Art Fair ended up being a great visit, showcasing an exceptional standard of work.
So many more artists I love to shoutout but one last mention is Katalin Macevics. Her illustration and her paintings really stood out above others and it was great to see her work being featured on the main flyer - and love that AR layer on top.
